The 3) to 4) looks like there should be an intermediate step or something, but that could be due to the veins?

of course there would be an intermediate step, there could, in fact, be tens and tens of middle steps between all of these =)
The key difference, though, is that the most advanced form has a more compact body, and the wings are just solif frames spanned with membrane (hence the veins) the gliding form has very thin but still solid plates as airfoils ;)
