Description

I have always wanted to add a dolphin to my design collection, which proved more difficult than it seemed. When flickr started flooding with renditions of Fumiaki Kawahata's dolphin a year or so ago, I felt inspired to try again but couldn't come up with anything worth showing.
Now, that I had seen Hideo Komatsu's dolphin, I got to work and this is the result. I am really happy with it, It tookhalf a dustbin of drafts to get to this result.

The model uses book symmetry, folded from 35 cm sheet of tant paper.

I have also tried folding it from 20 cm sheets of heyda origami paper 40 gsm and it worked like a charm, but any creases were too visible and you really have to know what you're doing otherwise the paper won't hold its shape if you fold, unfold and refold it too many times in the same area, so it's not really good for drafting, and it's too small to produce a displayable model.

Thus my attempt from tant, although I forgot that when this paper gets thick, it's not really fit for hazardeous crimps, such as the one between the back and the dorsal fin, and it tore... :(

So this is still a draft rather than a displayable model, although it's so close to being done that I wanted to show it to the world :)

I think lokta might be my paper of choice for the final fold.

I am really pleased with how the head turned out.
